Emerald Creek Garnet Area

There are only two places in the world you can find Star Garnets - India and in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests! The garnets found here are called "star garnets" because of a unique property that causes some of them to display a reflection like a four or six pointed star. India is the only other place in the world where star garnets like these are found in any quantity.

The 12-sided (dodecahedron) crystals found here range in size from sand particles to golf-ball or larger size. Gem quality faceting material is also found at the Garnet Area.

The Forest Service has developed the Garnet Area as a place where the public may collect these unique gems in a safe and environmentally friendly way. In the past, people would dig in the stream bed in search of the garnets. Now, due to concerns for water quality, aquatic habitat, and public safety, the Forest Service provides a stockpile of garnet bearing gravels from which people can gather material to run through one of two sluice boxes in search of garnets. Learn more

Directions: From St. Maries, Idaho, follow Highway 3 south 24 miles to Road 447. Proceed southwest 8 miles on Road 447 to the parking area. Permits, information, and the sluice area are a 1/2 mile hike up 281 Gulch. Be aware that there is considerable logging traffic in the vicinity of the Garnet Area. Please drive with care!

Sprag Pole Museum

Located in Murray, Idaho and twenty miles from Wallace along Dobson Pass Road. At the height of the mining boom, Murray was a city of several thousand, complete with a thriving red light district. Murray was one of several boisterous mining camps that became active in the late 1880s in Northern Idaho. Mines operated in the area from the 1880s to the 1950s. A Northern Pacific railroad line served the community for two years during the 1910s.

Today, around six original buildings remain standing, including a tiny post office, a fire station, and two bars, including the Sprag Pole Inn (built in 1884). You can visit the free 10,000-square-foot history museum which features everything from a restored 1904 carnival organ to antique mining and logging tools including The World’s Longest Carved Wooden Chain. This 121-foot-long wooden chain was carved by Walt Almquist, builder of the Sprag Pole Museum and long-time resident of Murray.

North Idaho is art!

North Idaho’s cultural scene is an interwoven tapestry of delights as colorful and North Idaho distinctive as our natural landscape. Many of our local festivals highlight great local artists, some with worldwide acclaim. Neighbors and national stars grace our stages beneath our clear star-filled skies. Local art galleries, like Frame of Mind, may introduce you to a new artist or help you frame you own piece of work.

Stroll Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint during art and music walks. Pend Oreille Arts Council’s Sunday concerts on the lawn are down to earth and uplifting at the same time. Sandpoint’s Panida Theatre keep the house lights up for those looking for something a little more staged. The Coeur d’Alene Symphony has been playing the classics (and more recently dabbling in popular music) for over three decades, all the while promoting the growth of young musicians through their annual Young Artists Competition.

When it comes to art and culture, check out North Idaho. Shining gems can be found all around.

Idaho has more groomed snowmobile trails than any other Western state, it's no wonder that folks in our region find snowmobiling one of their favorite recreation activities in the winter.

Priest Lake Area Snowmobile Trails
Mother Nature created a picture perfect marriage of early winter snow, spectacular scenery and many bright sunny days in the Priest Lake Basin. This natural winter paradise, coupled with the area's love affair with snowmobiles, has produced a groomed trail system in excess of 400-miles and a local business orientation that caters to snowmobile enthusiasts. The groomed trail system encircles both Priest Lake and Upper Priest Lake and affords easy access to spectacular powder pushing play areas. Snowmobiling on Sundance Mountain and challenging 'mountain goat' hill climbing challenges as well as postcard quality views of the lakes and surrounding mountains. In addition to the 400+ miles of groomed trails, there are numerous other unpublished routes throughout the 523,000 acres of public lands surrounding Priest Lake. The trails traverse through heavy timber, windswept ridges and snow-filled bowls above the tree line. Snowmobile trails are on either state or federal forest service roads ranging in elevation from 2,500 to over 7,000-feet. Click here for more info.

Coeur d'Alene Area Snowmobile Trails
Trails are on acres and acres of snow-covered land in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. A history of timber and mining in the Coeur d'Alene area has left an extensive network of trails. Coeur d'Alene marks the western edge of a 1000-mile trail system, centered at Wallace and stretching into Montana. Trails are on acres and acres of snow covered land in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Wallace is the heart of a snowmobiling area which stretches from Coeur d'Alene to St. Regis, Montana, a 1,000-mile trip. In most cases you can rent riding gear, g.p.s., helmet, goggles and your machine all for one low daily rate including your first tank of gas. Popular riding locations will always have accurate trail maps and usually guides for hire to familiarize you with the local area and access to facilities for food and fuel. Contact the Idaho Panhandle National Forest for maps and information.
