Pulaski Tunnel Trail - 4 miles round trip
5 minutes from downtown Wallace, the two-mile Pulaski Tunnel Trail takes hikers back in time to the summer of 1910 and one of the largest forest fires in American history. Hurricane-force winds turned small fires into a blowtorch that ravaged more than 3 million acres of Idaho, Montana and Washington, culminating in what’s now known as “the Big Blowup.” At trails-end is the tunnel and commemorative markers indicating where Ed Pulaski saved all but six of the 45 firefighters under his command by holding them at gunpoint in a mine tunnel. The trail follows part of the route the crew took along cascading West Fork of Placer Creek and brings hikers to an overlook across from the tunnel. Today’s lush forest belies the damage and tragedy of that century-old fire but interpretive signs along the way tell the story of the fire and the miraculous escape. Both the trail and the mine are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Pulaski Tunnel Trail is a nice and easy hike located at a well-marked trailhead soon after King Street leaves Wallace’s city limits (about half-mile south) of Wallace.

Interpretive signs along the trail tell of the calamitous summer of fire and the people who suffered its scars.

Allow two to four hours for the four-mile round trip to the Pulaski Tunnel overlook.

Accessibility:

First 725 feet of trail are accessible to visitors with disabilities.

Directions:

From I-90, take exit 61 toward I-90 BUS/Wallace. At off-ramp stop sign, turn and head south. Turn left on I-90 Business Route. Turn right onto 2nd Street. Continue to follow 2nd Street. Turn right onto Bank Street. Bank Street turns left and becomes King Street. King Street turns slightly left and becomes National Forest Road 456/Moon Pass Road. Continue on FS Road 456 for about one mile until you see the well-marked parking area on your left.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game Farragut Shooting Range Center features year-round public access to 50, 100, and 200-yard ranges plus trap and archery shooting. Reserved use for private events is available.

Directions: From US-95, take exit for ID-54 in Athol. Drive east on ID-54 for 3.8 miles toward Bayview and Farragut State Park. Just outside of Farragut State Park, at the traffic circle, take the third exit to travel north on Perimeter Road.  Follow Perimeter Road approximately 1.5 miles where you will find a gated gravel road on your right and a sign identifying the Farragut Shooting Range Center. Follow the gravel road approximately 0.4 miles to the range.  All shooters must check in/sign in at the range office.  The address is 33644 N. Shooters Road, but does not currently appear correctly on Google Maps.

Hours:  Winter hours (late fall through early spring) for the range, weather permitting, are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Summer hours, (mid-late spring through early-late fall), are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  No sign-ins after 3 p.m.  The cost is $5 per shooter per day, regardless of age.

All scheduled closures due to reservations or unscheduled closures due to weather or other factors will be posted on the IDFG website.  If you have any questions, please call the range office directly at (208) 683-1499 or call the Panhandle Regional office at (208) 769-1414.

What you will find at the range:

  • 50-Yard Range: 12 shooting points limited to handguns. The range accommodates 7-yard through 50-yard shooting distances.
  • 100-Yard Range: 12 shooting points limited to rifles, shotgun slugs and scoped handguns. Normal shooting distances allowed are 50-yards through 100-yards. Shorter distances can be accommodated with permission and under direct supervision of a Range Safety Officer. Typically shorter distances are only allowed to ensure a new gun/scope is “hitting the paper” and then normal shooting distances are reinstated.
  • 200-Yard Range: 12 shooting points limited to rifles. Normal shooting distances allowed are 100-yards through 200-yards.
  • Shotgun Trap: 4 shooting points with manually cocked mechanical throwers. Shot size at the Farragut Range is limited to #7.5, #8, and #9. Participants must supply their own clay targets.
  • Archery Range: 20 shooting points along a 1 mile 3D target loop.
  • Known Distance Sight In Archery Range:  Targets set at 10-yard intervals, from 20 to 60 yards.
  • Amenities: Vault toilets, covered firearm shooting. For sale: eye and ear protection, paper targets, reloading brass, shooting clays and bottled water.

Reserved Use: The Farragut Public Shooting Range hosts activities that enhance and strengthen the shooting sports. The range is available for reserved use to groups of 10 or more limited to 7 hours of shooting activity between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clubs, shooting teams, sanctioned and informal competition events, gun safety and marksmanship training events, family reunions, scouting groups, church groups, and all others are welcome and encouraged to consider hosting a special event at the Farragut Shooting Range.

In addition, the new Hunter Education Classroom reservation fee of $53.00 will take effect beginning Jan. 1, 2022. The classroom can easily seat approximately 30 people while offering plenty of parking space, a television and projector screen, indoor restroom and warming kitchen. The range use reservation is separate and in addition to the classroom reservation. Both may be available at the same time.

Contact the range office if interested in reserving space: 208-683-1499. Additional fees apply.

Here's what you missed in 2018:

Aug. 2 — Big Head Todd & the Monsters
The Colorado-bred alt-rockers have dabbled in blues, jazz and funk since forming in the late '80s and have developed a fervent following in jam-band circles.

Aug. 3 — Amos Lee
A traditionalist whose smooth, Americana-influenced sound recalls the great singer-songwriters of the '70s, with the occasional tip of the hat to classic R&B.

Aug. 4 — ZZ Top
If you were bummed these bearded southern rock legends canceled their previously scheduled Northern Quest gig, fear not: They'll be taking over Sandpoint with those spinning guitars that made them MTV staples in the '80s.

Aug. 9 — Greensky Bluegrass
This five-piece from Kalamazoo puts a jammy, improv-heavy twist on old-school bluegrass, and the result has brought them some cult adoration.

Aug. 10 — Sublime with Rome
Although they didn't have a hit until after lead singer Bradley Nowell's death, Sublime has since had a long (but bumpy) trajectory, now with frontman Rome Ramirez. They're returning to the area following a Northern Quest gig with the Offspring last July.

Aug. 11 — Phillip Phillips and Gavin DeGraw
A co-headlining show with two adult contemporary favorites: Phillip Phillips is best known for winning the 11th season of American Idol and Gavin DeGraw for early 2000s hits like "I Don't Want to Be" and "Chariot."

Beyond those headliners, there will be a family concert on Aug. 5, which features music from the Festival Community Orchestra alongside carnival-style attractions, and the annual fireworks-finale performance by the Spokane Symphony closes things out on Aug. 12.
