Bonners Ferry, Clark Fork and Naples Boundary Country The Italians who laid down this area’s stretch of railway paid homage to their homeland by naming the small town [2] Naples. Home to a unique, old time General Store, Naples is just north of [1] McArthur Lake Reservoir. In the winter, people from all over the nation head here for world-class snowmobiling. This 46 mile-wide strip of natural beauty borders not only Canada to the north, but Montana to the east and Washington to the west. The impressive Selkirk Mountain range dominates the western side of the county, and the sharp-peaked Cabinet Mountains indent the eastern border. Northeast of Bonners Ferry, the Purcell Mountain range majestically rise into Canada. Wildlife roam in the treed hillsides of the National Forest lands, offering unlimited recreational opportunities. [3]Bonner’s Ferry, nestled between the Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains on the banks of the Kootenai River, was first utilized by the white man as a camping site in 1859. When gold was discovered in the East Kootenays of British Columbia in 1863, thousands of prospectors surged northward via the Wildhorse Trail. Edwin Bonner, an enterprising merchant from Walla Walla, Wash., established a ferry in 1864 where the trail crossed the broad Kootenai River. The present city of Bonner’s Ferry was created in 1899, most of it is still perched on stilts to avoid seasonal spring floods. Bonner’s Ferry was awarded the moniker of“Most Friendly Town in Idaho”voted by tourists that traveled to all of the state’s counties. Try your luck at the Kootenai Casino and enjoy the dining, lodging and shopping options of the town. Bonner’s Ferry also has a golf course, micro brewery, public swimming pool, and a museum. Hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, hunting, 4-wheeling and camping abound. The [4] Kootenai Wildlife Refuge, open year round, provides a refuge for waterfowl and wild animals, and is located just west of Bonner’s Ferry. Check out the Myrtle Creek waterfall, a short distance from the headquarters building. Back on Hwy LOCAL FACTS...
